Don’t buy, rent

If you’re about to plunk down a hefty chunk of change on textbooks (because it is that time of year), read this first.

According to this New York Times story the first major collegiate book publisher has decided to rent textbooks. That’s right, rent. Not sell.

They certainly aren’t the first. I picked up a book from BookRenter.com when I realized they were the Netflix of textbooks. Who wants the hassle of trying to sell all those unwanted books back at the end of the quarter? With rental programs, you just mail them back.

The NYT story mentions a few other outlets that are already renting or considering rental programs. Check them out before you buy.
